Storage Tips & Guides

Practical advice for packing a storage unit well — most of it worth knowing before you load the first box.

Pack for the Georgia climate

Summer heat and humidity are the main enemies here. Anything with wood veneer, leather, electronics, photographs, or paperwork does noticeably better in a climate controlled unit. Never seal fabric or upholstery in plastic — it traps moisture against the material.

Use uniform boxes

Matching box sizes stack squarely and make proper use of vertical space. Mixed sizes leave gaps and build unstable stacks, so less fits in the same unit. Heaviest at the bottom, lightest on top.

Leave an aisle

Store what you need most often near the door and keep a walkway down the middle. Filling wall to wall means unloading half the unit to reach one thing.

Label the side, not the top

Once boxes are stacked you cannot see the tops. Label two sides so you can read them from the aisle.

Protect the floor

Pallets or a sheet of cardboard under the bottom layer keeps items off concrete and lets air move underneath.

Empty and dry appliances

Refrigerators, washers, and dishwashers should be drained and left slightly ajar. A sealed damp appliance will grow mould within weeks.
