Storage Unit Size Guide

Picking a size is the part most people find hardest. The guide below covers what realistically fits in each of the common sizes. When you are genuinely between two sizes, take the larger one — the extra few dollars a month is almost always cheaper than renting a second unit later.

5′ × 10′ (50 sq ft)

A walk-in closet. Boxes, seasonal décor, small furniture, garden tools, and sports gear.

10′ × 10′ (100 sq ft)

About half a garage. The contents of a studio or one-bedroom apartment, including a mattress set and sofa.

10′ × 15′ (150 sq ft)

Contents of a two-bedroom home or a small office fit-out, appliances included.

10′ × 20′ (200 sq ft)

A standard one-car garage. Three bedrooms of furniture, or business inventory and equipment.

10′ × 25′ and larger (250+ sq ft)

Large households, vehicles, trailers, or commercial stock that needs room to move around.

A few things worth knowing

Boxes stack; furniture does not. If most of what you are storing is boxed, you can size down. If it is bulky furniture and appliances, size up.

Leave yourself an aisle. If you will need to get to things during your rental rather than just storing and forgetting, allow room to walk in rather than filling wall to wall.
